As Vancouver & Whistler prepare to host the 2010 Winter Games, The Salvation Army will proactively respond to the social impact of this event on our country. Experts indicate that major world events bring an increase in sex trafficking to meet the demand of tourists and spectators of the given event. It is suspected that young women and children will be exploited during the games and the supply of these women may come from foreign countries, other Canadian provinces and existing sex trade in Vancouver’s downtown eastside, Burnaby and Surrey. Traffickers may start up their operations as early as 2008 and certainly will increase their supply by 2009. After the 2010 games, victims may be moved to another trendy city or abandoned here to fend for themselves.
